Globalsapiens: an introduction to Parallel Paranoia, Humans In Cages and Silently Chained - the respective alternate names for artistic collective Mikk Murray, John Ledger and Jade Morris. Alternate names that speak of lifestyles that they know are destructive to the planet and most often self-destructive, whilst trying to find cracks in which to get out and make a change. This exhibition aims to resonate with all those who care but feel trapped and helpless to make a change, and possibly then inspire them to believe that they need not be this way.

20 years from now I'll make it, somehow

'20 years from now I'll make it, somehow' was made in late 2007, and was quite a blatant showcase of all my anxieties about what humanity faces in the 21st century. Nearly 4 years on, we are still on the same track towards a right old mess. We still don't have enough time in the day to Analyse (like Thom Yorke said on his 2007 album Eraser) where we are, where we want to be, and what we can do to change where we're going. The demands of modern life keep intensifying, now that our privacy can be gatecrashed at any moment by the ever-forward march of techno-gadgets that dominate our lives and now that the recession and government spending cuts mean that taking life one step at a time is what is necessary rather than thinking about the future. Sometimes I reckon my works work better as wake up calls outside the gallery walls and rather than inside them (where we are in the cotton wool-ness of our evening dress and the red wine we are given).
I decided to leave this piece in the waiting room at Sheffield Train Station; now there's only the fast train stoppage point of Meadowhall shopping centre on the Hallam line which hasn't received one of my works so far (I think the likes of me, would be monitored by the cameras as being 'suspicious' as soon as I set floor towards this complex - not that this is a particularity suspicious thing I'm doing, but we do live in an insane and paranoid world).
I really couldn't think of anywhere where I'd have the time to hang this drawing up, but as soon as I started covering it up in newspaper (to avoid the usual comments I get on public transport when carrying a work around) I quite liked the idea of it being wrapped up. After all, they are gifts, sort of, as I know that I'm not going to get them back.

The revenge of a discarded friend

This piece of work is some years old now but, because of the nature of its theme, it is one I have always wanted to leave in a outdoor situation. I wanted to leave it in a Yorkshire city I had never left a work in before; I chose a spot under the mainline railway bridge, alongside the canal in Leeds city centre. The 'discarded friend' is nature, humans beings are the ones who turfed it out of their homes in favour of a concrete,plastic and virtual world, but it is an eviction which it does not have the power to be permanently enforced.

Land of opportunity

Although a reflection of the mood I was in, this is a reflection of most peoples lives in Britain. Used, manipulated, lock in a man made cage where we are told what to do and think, we believe we are getting a good deal, while in reality we are being starved of quality of life, told when and how long to work, and told when we are 'supposed to feel joy'. I was waiting in a local train station on the rundown, neglected side of Wakefield, West Yorkshire. The train station is awful, but because of how badly neglected it is, it is hard to not feel some empathy for it. Suddenly i thought to myself "you know you haven't made it in life when you are waiting for a train here!!", and as daft as that sounds , i then couldn't think of any other place in the nearby area where the piece of work i was just about to start would fit in better . If you find any other small drawings on trains, pubs or bus stations by 'humans in cages' its me, i'm not trying to hide my true self, i'm unbelievably bad a that kind of thing!. But the name 'Humans in cages' is of relevance and importance to my work.

The odds that were against us (2007/2008)

This piece - The odds that were against us - was intended to be put on the hills over looking a town. A landscape of troubles that will possibly face mankind this century. I was quite doubtful about our chances at this time, I wanted the work to be imagined as a kind of monument to mankind (as if it has gone) looking down on him from the hills. (placed upon High Hoyland ridge overlooking South Yorkshire, United Kingdom)

Humans in Cages

We Increasingly spend our lives in isolated boxes, and artists are encouraged to display their work in isolated boxes. Humans in cages is the name I use when i ignore fears of losing possesions and leave my works in public sapces, spaces which try to be in-keeping with the theme of the piece of work. The name Humans in cages is quite fitting to both my life, the conditions of the human world under capitalism, and the stranglehold which i feel upon me as an artist. Although I have never turned to street art (in its usual form) to epxress my ideas, partly due to my cowardice, the walls underneath train stations and canals, and general outdoor spots feel like the natural places for my work to be seen.
